Orthodontic Treatment

“Wait”, you may be thinking, “Braces for dogs???” Not exactly…. While we don’t use the traditional brackets and wires you or your kids might have had, there are techniques used to move teeth that are causing pain or trauma due to misalignment. We may place a composite inclined plane or ramp to prevent lower canine teeth from puncturing the palate, or place buttons and elastic bands to move a tooth into its normal position. Please note that, at Aggie Animal Dental Center, we perform orthodontics to move teeth that are causing pain, trauma, or dysfunction, not for cosmetic reasons. Because many cases of malocclusion (improper alignment of the teeth and/or jaws) are hereditary, we strongly recommend against breeding animals who require orthodontic treatment (see the contract we require clients to sign prior to commencing treatment).

For more information on malocclusions and their treatment, see this handout.
